It was during the 2003 Xmas holidays that I first heard Kofo's music.

I had not been to Nigeria in a few years and in those years, it seemed the Nigerian music scene had exploded. The number of new artists, talent level and the quality of music was unbelievable.

The world knew about Femi Kuti and Lagbaja, who lead this next generation of musicians, but my sense of things was that there were so many others that deserved to be on the world stage too. It was with this thought and a plan to discover some more great music that I walked into Jazzhole at Falomo Shopping Center in Lagos.

I advised the sales manager on duty that I had Naira burning a hole in my pocket and it was his job to find the music that would separate me from my money and cure my pain. I further told him the genre was unimportant only that I should like the music. He smiled at the challenge and after walking through the store for a few minutes started playing tracks from the cd's he had selected.

The first few were ok but not exactly memorable. Then he put on what I would later learn was "Ejire" by Kofo the Wonderman. I was speechless.

The music was not easy to categorize but it was infectious. I made him turn the stereo up and marveled at the music. This man had command of the talking drum like few people I had heard before. And he could sing too!

Who was this Kofo guy? Why had I not heard about him before now? I had to track him down.

Master drummer, composer, lead singer, bandleader and all around good guy, Kofo passionately blends traditional African singing and drumming with a funky afro beat.

The featured cd PROOF showcases Kofo's 'voice' on both the talking drums and his inspired vocals.

Coming from a family of traditional singers and drummers, Kofo has been playing the drums since he was 4 years old and as his skill on this cd shows, he has truly earned the "Wonderman" moniker.

The Yoruba's say "irohin ko to a fo ju ba". This literarily means no amount of words or description can substitute for personal experience.

Listen for yourself and meet Kofo the Wonderman! Then buy the CD and place it alongside Femi and Lagbaja in your music collection.

ps. The sales manager did meet the challenge and successfully separated me from a nice chunk of Naira. Yes, I left Jazzhole a few thousand naira lighter, but I was a happy customer!
